Washington, D.C., is easy to explore without a car. You can walk between nearby attractions, hop on a bus, or use bikes and scooters to move across the city. Some options work best for longer trips, like the Metro or Metrobus. Others are ideal for short distances or scenic rides. The ROOST White House is conveniently located near multiple transportation options. You can combine methods that work with your schedule and your stamina. Knowing your options makes getting around smoother and lets you focus on your plans instead of traffic or parking.

Metrorail

The Metrorail is the city’s subway system. It’s fast, reliable, and reaches most major areas, including the National Mall, museums along the Mall, Union Station, and areas in Maryland and Virginia. Trains run frequently, usually every few minutes during peak hours. To make it easier for visitors, schedules are posted online and in stations. Use a SmarTrip card for easy fare payment. It’s also worth noting that some stations have elevators and escalators, which can save time if you have luggage or mobility concerns.

Riding the Metro can also be practical if you want to avoid street traffic during peak hours. It’s typically the fastest way to reach distant neighborhoods or major attractions without worrying about parking.

Distance from The ROOST: Gallery Place-Chinatown station is about half a mile.

Metrobus

Metrobus complements the subway by covering routes the Metro does not. It goes to neighborhoods farther out and extends into Maryland and Virginia. Buses also run frequently, and most routes operate every 10 to 20 minutes during the day. Many buses accept SmarTrip cards for added convenience.

Metrobus is most practical for getting to areas that are not directly on the subway line. For example, you could reach Eastern Market for fresh produce, the Kennedy Center for performances, or Arlington for sightseeing. It is a good option if your destination is a short walk from a bus stop but not from a Metro station.

Distance from The ROOST: Closest bus stops are within one to two blocks.

Capital Bikeshare

Capital Bikeshare is a bike rental program with stations across D.C., Maryland, and Virginia. Rent bikes for short trips and return to any station. They’re sturdy and designed for city streets, with adjustable seats to accommodate different riders.

Bikeshare works well for exploring waterfront areas, markets, or museums at your own pace. It also allows flexibility to stop along the way or adjust your route. Payment is handled through a membership, short-term pass, or app. Stations are all across the city, so finding a bike near The Roost is easy.

Distance from The ROOST: Nearest station is 0.3 miles away at 8th Street NW and F Street NW.

Walking

Walking is practical for central areas like Penn Quarter, the National Mall, and Dupont Circle. It lets you move between attractions, stop at cafes, or explore streets in detail. Walking requires no extra cost and offers the flexibility to change plans on a whim.

Even if you plan to use other transportation methods for longer trips, walking remains the simplest way to cover short distances. It is also the most predictable, since you do not need to wait for buses or worry about traffic delays.

Distance from The ROOST: Many attractions are within a half-mile to two-mile radius.

Electric Scooters

Scooters from Lime, Lyft, and Spin are convenient for short trips. Riders unlock them with an app, and scooters can be parked legally on sidewalks when finished. They’re best for trips along streets or bike lanes. Helmets are recommended, especially for new riders.

These scoots are ideal for moving around between restaurants, shops, and local markets. They’re a faster alternative to walking or waiting for a bus or the Metro. Many visitors use scooters for quick trips around downtown while navigating busy streets.

Distance from The ROOST: Scooters are available throughout the neighborhood, usually within a block or two.

Ride-Sharing (Uber and Lyft)

Ride-sharing services offer visitors to the city a flexible transportation option when public transit or scooters are not ideal. They are convenient for late-night trips, airport runs, or destinations that are not near a Metro or bus stop. You can easily schedule rides in advance or request one on demand. Prices vary depending on time, distance, and demand, so it’s worth checking rates before confirming a trip.

Ride-sharing is also a great option when you have luggage or when the weather makes walking or waiting for a bus uncomfortable.

Distance from The ROOST: Pickups can be requested directly outside the hotel.

Taxis and Cabs

Traditional taxis are available across the city. Fares are metered, and you can hail a cab on the street, at taxi stands, or book one in advance. They are reliable for direct trips and carrying luggage. Although ride-sharing has become more common, taxis remain an option for travelers who prefer the familiarity of a cab service.

Distance from The ROOST: Often available within a few minutes’ walk or at the hotel entrance.

Water Taxis

Water taxis connect Georgetown, The Wharf, and Alexandria. It’s a scenic way to travel, and you’re able to avoid street traffic. Water taxis operate mostly in warmer months, and fares are charged per ride. They are especially useful for reaching destinations along the Potomac River quickly and for enjoying a short waterfront ride.

Distance from The ROOST: Nearest access points are about two miles away at The Wharf.

Old Town Trolley Tours

Old Town Trolley Tours is a hop-on, hop-off service through central D.C. and nearby historical areas. While it is usually used for sightseeing, it’s also a practical way to move between destinations along the route. Trolleys follow a schedule and include narration, making it easy to cover multiple locations in a short time.

Distance from The ROOST: Pick-up points are usually within half a mile.

Georgetown Metro Connection

The Georgetown Metro Connection shuttle connects the neighborhood to nearby Metro stations. It is particularly useful because Georgetown has no subway station of its own. The shuttle operates on a schedule, making it simple to plan trips to downtown or other areas served by the Metro.
