George Peabody Library - History

Architecture

There is more to see at the library than the books. Walking into the library, your breath is taken away by the five stories of bookshelves. In the center of the building is an open atrium where you can see the glass skylight mounted 61 feet above. Each floor features a balcony space that lines the atrium. They feature ornamental cast-iron framing fabricated by the Bartlett-Robbins Company.

Book Collection

The library’s collection of books consists of over 300,000 volumes. Many are from the 19th century. You will find topics on British art, religion, science, travel, exploration, and architecture. The library also has a collection of rare books, manuscripts, and university archives.

Events

The library is a popular venue for formal events and weddings. Your event will take place in the center of the library with the sky-high atrium above, surrounded by books. You will need to contact the library staff for availability and pricing.

How to Visit

The library is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays through Thursdays. The library is closed on Friday and Saturday. It is a closed stacks library, so visitors are not permitted upstairs. This is to protect the collection and the safety of the visitors. You are welcome to enjoy the books while at the library but are not permitted to remove them.
