While there is plenty to see and do in and around Baltimore, you are also close to several cities worth visiting. Set aside a day or two during your Baltimore trip to take a quick trip to one of the many nearby cities. You will need to rent a car to take these trips, but you won’t have to drive for long.

Washington DC

About a 40-minute drive from Baltimore is Washington DC, the capital of the United States. Here you will find a head-spinning number of museums and national monuments. While the city warrants a full trip in itself, you can turn it into a quick trip from Baltimore. Within a day or weekend, you can pick your must-see attractions. Head to the National Mall for several national monuments. Or you could walk through one of the Smithsonian Museums. Finally, you will find world-class restaurants and shopping that cater to the international residents of DC.

Annapolis

Another famous city that is less than an hour’s drive from Baltimore is Annapolis. It is the state capital of Maryland. It sits on the Chesapeake Bay and is most well-known for being the home of the United States Naval Academy. The academy was established in 1845, showing just how old Annapolis is. You will see beautiful examples of historic buildings. There is also a rich cultural community with museums, theater, and art.

Gunpowder Falls State Park

Only a 30-minute drive north of the city, you'll escape into the natural beauty of Gunpowder Falls State Park. The park is spread across six unique areas, each offering something special for outdoor enthusiasts. While visiting, you can enjoy miles of trails and paths, perfect for walking, hiking, biking, or horseback riding. There’s also a 1,500-foot beach where you can relax or take a swim in the water.

Harrisburg

While it may be a bit of a drive, the two-hour commute is well worth visiting the capital of Pennsylvania. The city has deep roots in American history by playing a major role in the Civil War. Do not assume that Harrisburg is stodgy, though. Once the sun sets, the town comes to life with a lively bar and club scene. While you are in the area of Harrisburg, you are also close to Hershey. This town is a must-visit for chocolate lovers, as it is the home of the famous candy company. Spend time at the Hershey Amusement Park with its 14 roller coasters and 76 attractions.

Alexandria

The city of Alexandria is another destination that is about an hour from Baltimore. Head south, and you will be in one of the country’s oldest cities. It has a welcoming charm that you immediately feel as you walk the red brick streets. There is plenty of shopping at local boutiques. There are also several small museums that each tell their own quirky story. However, one of the most notable attractions in Alexandria is Mount Vernon, the home of George Washington.
