Austin, TX, is the kind of city where you can simply see where the day takes you. You can step outside and just let the day shape itself— whether it’s a dip in Barton Springs, a hunt for the best Tex-Mex tacos, or catching a show at the Continental Club. Staying at ROOST Rainey makes all of those options that much easier. The location puts you close to the Colorado River that runs through the city, downtown’s liveliest streets, and some of the city’s best outdoor spaces. Most importantly, you’re right on Rainey Street, one of Austin’s most recognizable neighborhoods, where restored bungalows, backyard patios, and late-night energy all live side by side.

Right Around the Corner from ROOST

Everything in this section is walkable from ROOST, usually around twenty minutes depending on pace.

Rainey Street Historic District

Roost_Rainey_3196

Rainey Street is a charming, neighborhood-like street with bungalows that have been turned into bars and restaurants with string-light-filled backyards, as well as spaces with food trucks. Instead of towering bar buildings, Rainey keeps its original homes, now reimagined as patios, cocktail spots, and backyard hangouts that give the street a distinctly Austin feel.

Head to spots like Victory Lap bottles for cocktails and good times— a casual sports bar where big screens, cold drinks, and an easygoing crowd make it a natural gathering place before a night out. Restaurant Fina is an intimate spot serving a seasonally-driven menu that feels more like a neighborhood dinner party than a formal night out, while Clive Bar is the spot to spend casual afternoons with hammocks, outdoor games, and dog-friendly vibes.

Lady Bird Lake Trail

Lady Bird Lake Boardwalk - Ways to Get Around

Named after the First Lady Johnson, Lady Bird Lake is a popular outdoor spot and a very much part of daily life for locals. Early mornings bring runners and cyclists looping the trail, while afternoons fill with paddleboards and kayaks drifting across the water. From early bird joggers to afternoon strollers, the trails here are always bustling. Meanwhile, the lake is a popular spot for paddleboards, kayaks, canoes, and dragon boats.

Congress Avenue Bridge

Congress Avenue bridge - Best Things to Do

Visitors like to check out the Congress Avenue Bridge in the evening, especially during the bat season in the summer, when the world’s largest colony gathers. Some guests bring blankets and chairs and settle on the hill to wait for them to emerge. Just after sunset, thousands of bats sweep out from beneath the bridge in a swirling cloud, creating one of Austin’s most unusual nightly rituals. It might sound a little macabre, but it’s quite magical. Bring bug spray!

Waller Beach at Town Lake

Waller Beach is a lush spot filled with cypress trees and plenty of wildlife like turtles and birds. It’s one of those quiet pockets along the water where locals slow down for a bit—some launching kayaks, others stretching out on the grass with a book or picnic. People kayak and canoe on the water or spread out on the grass to take in the natural landscape.

Mexic Arte Museum

Founded in 1984 by a group of local artists, the Mexic Arte Museum celebrates Mexican art and culture as well as Mexican-Americans in Texas and their diverse and rich contributions. The museum has long been part of Austin’s cultural fabric, spotlighting artists and traditions that shape the city’s identity.

The museum’s Day of the Dead parade is the largest Día de los Muertos celebration in the state.

Easy Spots to Fit Into Your Day

These places are a quick drive from ROOST, generally five minutes or less, and easy to work into a flexible day.

Texas State Capitol

Texas State Capitol

This is Texas, so of course, the Capitol is the largest state Capitol in the country. The grounds are open, and the building, which is a National Historic Landmark,  is an impressive structure that offers guided tours. The pink granite building rises above downtown and offers one of the best vantage points for understanding both Texas history and Austin’s layout.

Auditorium Shores

Auditorium Shores is another one of the city’s inviting urban green spaces and one of the reasons Austin is known as one of the country’s most liveable cities. From here, you get wide open views of the skyline across the water, which is why it often becomes a gathering point for concerts, festivals, and relaxed weekend afternoons. There’s a sloping amphitheater, a landscaped lawn lined with trees, and a fenced-in dog park. Don’t miss the statue of local musician Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Republic Square

Republic Square shifts depending on the day. Sometimes there is a market or food vendors set up. Other times, it becomes a quiet downtown pause with its shaded benches, a few food trucks nearby, and a place to reset before heading back into the city’s pace. It’s easy to underestimate, which makes it useful when you want a break without adding another stop to your list.

Places Worth Planning Around

All of these spots are about a ten-minute drive from ROOST and work best when you give them a few uninterrupted hours.

South Congress Avenue

Colorado River South Congress bridge - When to Visit

South Congress is a bustling corridor filled with shops, bars, and restaurants, both old and new, funky and formal. It’s one of Austin’s most recognizable streets, where vintage storefronts, music history, and modern boutiques all share the same stretch of sidewalk. It’s a popular place to stroll, window shop, and people-watch.

Check out Allen’s Boots, a beloved cowboy boot shop that’s been open for over 50 years. There’s also Heritage Boot Co., a female-owned shop that’s been around since 2007. Feathers Boutique has an impressive selection of designer, vintage, and western wear, while Stag Provisions offers classic menswear.

After shopping, stop by Junes for classic French brasserie fare. The legendary Continental Club, which opened in 1955, remains one of Austin’s most respected music venues, where the city’s long relationship with live music still plays out nightly.

Zilker Metropolitan Park

Zilker Metropolitan Park

Zilker Park is large enough to feel open even when it is busy. Paths cut through the grass. Groups spread out under trees. It’s Austin’s unofficial backyard, where festivals, picnics, frisbee games, and weekend lounging all happen in the same wide green space. You can walk for a while or stay in one place and watch the day pass. It adapts easily to different moods.

Barton Springs Pool

Barton Springs is a huge spring-fed swimming pool that stays cool year-round at a temperature of 68 degrees. It’s the perfect way to cool off during the hotter months and equally comfortable during the winter. Fed by natural underground springs, the water stays crystal clear and refreshingly cold even during Austin’s hottest days. People swim laps, lounge on floats, or take turns off the diving board. Bring your suit, a book, and a blanket, and soak up one of the coolest elements of Austin culture.

Blanton Museum of Art

Blanton Museum of Art

Located on the campus of the University of Texas, the Blanton holds over 20,000 works of art from old masters to contemporary pieces. The Oslo-based architecture firm is behind the recent renovation, which includes public art pieces, lounging areas, and huge fiberglass petal-like structures that serve as a canopy. Don’t miss the small chapel designed by Ellsworth Kelly.

Bullock Texas State History Museum

Visitors are greeted by a giant brass star when they arrive at The Bullock Museum, which presents the story of Texas through a series of interactive exhibits. Inside, the museum traces the state’s history through artifacts, film, and immersive displays that bring major moments in Texas history to life. Don’t miss the museum shop’s local souvenirs, like longhorns and locally grown pecans.

Umlauf Sculpture Garden and Museum

Umlauf Sculpture Garden, donated to the city by the late sculptor Charles Umlauf, features over 250 of his sculptures in a quiet, picturesque setting above Barton Springs. Tree-lined paths wind through the garden, creating a calm retreat where art and nature blend together just minutes from the city’s busiest streets. Visitors can stroll the paths as well as check out some of the public programs and exhibits.

Things That Depend on the Calendar

These experiences do not always happen, but they are worth checking during your stay. All are easy to reach from ROOST with a short drive.

Live Sports in Austin

University of Texas athletics drives most major sports nights in the city. Game days bring an unmistakable energy across Austin, especially in the fall when Longhorn football fills the city with burnt orange. Darrell K Royal Texas Memorial Stadium hosts football games in the fall, drawing large crowds on Saturdays. During basketball season, games move indoors at the Moody Center, where schedules change week to week.

Seasonal Events Around Austin

Lady Bird Lake

Austin is home to numerous seasonal events that change throughout the year. The city’s calendar constantly shifts between music festivals, neighborhood markets, outdoor concerts, and food events that reflect Austin’s creative and culinary culture. Spring brings outdoor festivals and neighborhood markets. Summer has evening events and night markets when the heat calms down a bit. Fall weekends are filled with football, food events, and limited-run pop-ups. Winter stays quieter, with smaller gatherings and indoor programming taking the lead.
